How to Do a Cheerleading Pom Pass

A perfectly executed pom pass can mean the difference between a brilliant cheerleading performance or a lackluster display of team spirit. Pom passes are executed between cheerleaders and are either handed off or tossed in the air, depending on the choreography and level of skill. If your team wants to be competitive or just dazzle the crowd at a game, learning several kinds of pom passes will turn heads and get the audience cheering.

Instructions

  1. Handoff Pom Pass

    • 1

Choose a spot on each cheerleader's body that acts as a landmark, such as the belly button or underneath the chin to hold the poms. Each cheerleader will hold the poms in the same location on their body for easy passing.

    • 2

Pass one pom at a time to the cheerleader next to you while clapping or doing a cheer. For added difficulty, have several rows of cheerleaders passing poms at the same time.

    • 3

Drop each pom once it gets to the last cheerleader. The last cheerleader can toss them into a neat pile beside her or toss behind the squad to be retrieved later.

    Tossing Pom Pass

    • 4

Toss your pom to another cheerleader.

    • 5

Catch a pom another cheerleader tosses at you. Be sure the pom does not hit the floor, unless it is intended in the routine. For varsity teams, adding a choreography step or leap as the pom is in midair will add to the difficulty in the routine.

    • 6

Toss your pom straight into the air above your head. Add a kick, jump or dance step before catching the pom.
