How to Spot for a Back Handspring

In both gymnastics and cheerleading, the back handspring is one of the most popular tumbling moves used. The back handspring, in gymnastics, is used during the floor exercise as well as on the balance beam. To preform this move, the tumbler stands in a squat position and quickly bends backward, putting her hands on the floor, whipping her feet up and over her body in a fast motion and then finally landing with her feet on the floor. While learning the back handspring, a spotter is needed to maintain safety.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the arms of the gymnast close to the head. This will prevent the spotter from getting slapped during the exercise.

    • 2

Place your right hand under the tumbler's lower back as she is jumping backward. This will help support her body as her hands reach for the floor.

    • 3

Keep your right hand under the gymnast's back and place your left hand under her thighs to support her legs.

    • 4

Press your left hand against the tumbler's thighs and give them a slight push while removing your right hand from her back. This will help guide her legs over the rest of her body.

    • 5

Place your right hand behind the gymnast's lower back as soon as she has landed on her feet. This will prevent her from falling backward onto the mat.
