How to Do a Back Handspring When You're Afraid

The back handspring is a gymnastics tumbling maneuver in which the performer throws her arms back, bounces off of her hands, and flips her feet over her head and back down to land on her feet. Although the move is a basic tumbling move, many new practitioners may experience fear when trying it, especially if they're jumping in a backward rotation for the first time. By slowly building up to full back handsprings, you ensure this process is as minimally intimidating as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice on soft mats when learning to handspring, as the mats will help cushion you and make the move less intimidating.

    • 2

Jump straight up while arching your back in mid-air to get used to the feeling of bending over backward.

    • 3

Practice performing the jump from the top of a wedge mat. The wedge provides extra height and the angle makes it easier to get your legs moving backward and over the top, reducing the worry of failing to get over and falling on your head.

    • 4

Jump backward with the assistance of a spotter to help support you and throw your legs over when first learning. The spotter helps you avoid falls on your head, making the jump less intimidating.

    • 5

Squat down as if sitting, with your arms extended straight out, and then jump back as you throw your arms up over your head.

    • 6

Plant both hands down on the mat, with your arms straight.

    • 7

Kick your legs over the top to complete the rotation and land on your feet.
