How to Organize a Little League Schedule
Instructions
-
Organize the Schedule for the Regular Season
-
1
Decide how many games each team will play in the regular season. The average Little League regular season schedule can have each team play up to 20 games. Decide how many games the facilities will be able to support.
-
2
Keep it fair. Generally, it is best for each team to play each other team an equal number of times. Using 20 as the intended game count, if there are six teams in the division, then each team will play each other four times. If the amount of teams does not divide evenly, change the game total or randomize which teams are not paired off as often as others.
-
3
Rotate which team is "home" and which team is "visitor" when teams replay each other. At the end of the season, each team should have been "home" and "visitor" an equal number of times.
-
4
Randomize which team plays who and when. You will also want to make sure that no teams face each other two games in a row. Try rotate which days certain teams play on so an individual team is not stuck playing only on Sundays.
Organize the Schedule for the Playoffs
-
5
Decide how many teams will make the playoffs. Usually, the four teams with the four best regular season records will make the playoffs. In the case of a tie, compare the tying teams' match-ups during the season to decide who wins, or schedule a one-on-one playoff.
-
6
Face off the first place team of the regular season against the playoff team with the worst record. Likewise, the second place team should be placed against the playoff team with the second-worst record.
-
7
Run a double elimination tournament. Each team will need to lose twice to be knocked out of the playoffs. This is a favorite tournament type in Little Leagues.
-
8
Consult basic double elimination style tournament templates to schedule the playoffs. You will be able to find templates in Little League books or on the Internet. Alternatively, you can draft your own.
