Drills for Infielders
-
1
Line the kids up at an infield position or spread the kids out throughout the infield. Have someone stand at first base with a glove and someone stand at home with a baseball bat and a bucket of balls.
-
2
Tell the kids to take their gloves off. Hit grounders to them one at a time. Make sure the grounders are soft enough so the kids will not be hurt when fielding them bare-handed. This will work on the kids' soft hands and teach them to always use two hands.
-
3
Tell the kids to put their gloves back on. Now, hit them grounders to their left and right. Make sure that the kids always get in front of the ball, keep their eyes down and use two hands.
-
4
Have the kids always throw the ball to first base after fielding a grounder. Stress that making a good throw is just as important as fielding the ball, especially in Little League.
Drills for Outfielders
-
5
Line the kids up at an outfield position or spread the kids out in the outfield. You should place one person at second base with a glove and another somewhere in the field. The second individual should have a bucket of balls.
-
6
Hit the players some routine fly balls to warm up. Stress that they must always use two hands when catching the ball. Have the players throw to second base after they catch the ball and stress that a good throw is just as important as the catch.
-
7
Hit the players some grounders. Outfielders need to field grounders as often as fly balls. Tell the players that the most important thing is that they stop the ball and encourage them to drop to a knee.
-
8
Mix it up. The hardest part about outfield is judging the fly ball. Remind the kids to take a good step back after a ball has been hit. This is a widely circulated Little League rule.
