Sports Motivation Ideas
-
Make It Enjoyable
-
Personal motivation comes easiest when the sport is enjoyable. Making the practices and games enjoyable is an important part of inspiring motivation in athletes because it makes the persistence and hard work worthwhile. If the athlete does not like what he is doing, it is difficult to continue working hard. This does not mean that athletes always will like the task, but that the end goal is something they personally want to achieve if the sport fits their interest.
Set Goals
-
Setting goals is an important motivational tool because it provides a guide for where the athlete wants to go. The higher the goal, the more hard work that is necessary. Wanting to attain high goals motivates athletes through that hard work. Goals can be based on personal performance or team performance. For example, you can set individual goals, such as to run the mile under a specific time. As a team, you might set the goal to beat your rival team or to place first in the conference. With goals, you know what you want to accomplish and that provides motivation to work hard.
Inspirational Quotes
-
Find inspiration in the words of others. Inspirational quotes can come from elite athletes in your sport, past coaches or general quotes that apply to working hard to achieve your goals. For example, legendary football coach Vince Lombardi once said "The greatest accomplishment is not in never failing, but in rising again after you fall." This quote can apply to any sport and can have significant individual meaning to athletes reading it. Put this and other types of inspirational quotes in your locker room, weight room and training facility as a reminder to keep working hard.
Practice with a Partner
-
Whether you are involved in a team sport like football, or a more individualized sports like gymnastics, it is important to work with others to train. Working with others is a good way to build motivation because it provides someone to help maintain high intensity for practices. For example, runners work together to maintain a strong pace, pushing one another to keep up. Competition at practice can inspire team members to work harder and keep going. The same is true for team sports, where teammates work to push one another through a variety of training activities. The key is to have someone who can help to keep you motivated by not letting you stop.
Role Models
-
Looking to a fellow competitor as an inspirational role model can be a motivator in sports. Look for athletes in your sport who have found the success you want and follow their steps to achieve your own success. You also can look to famous athletes or teams within your sport who found success. Consider their training methods and the persistence behind their success. Use the drive and dedication they exhibited to fuel your own motivation.
