How to Create a Team Roster

Coaching youth sports requires organization and enthusiasm. As a coach, you are responsible for the overall well-being of your athletes. Creating a team roster provides a quick and efficient way to record player information in case of emergency or other situations requiring identification and communication. Team rosters can vary with how much information they contain about a team member, but they are essential for the coach to be as organized as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Count the number of players you have on your team. On a blank sheet of paper, draw one horizontal line for every player on your team. Beginning 1 1/2 inches from the top of the paper, these lines should be spaced evenly.

    • 2

Draw vertical lines to create boxes for each piece of player information. For example, you may wish to include a jersey number, height and weight, parent contact information, and medical concerns. The first vertical line should be drawn about 3 inches in from the left edge of the paper to leave enough room to write the player's name.

    • 3

List the players on the horizontal lines, alphabetically by last name first. If you have more than one player with the same last name, list the player whose first name comes first in the alphabet. For example, "Johnson, Brad" would come before "Johnson, Steve."

    • 4

Fill in the remaining boxes for each player with the appropriate information. Some players may have more than one contact phone number. In this case, consult with the parents about which phone number to use in case of an emergency.

    • 5

Distribute copies of the roster to the appropriate people, such as assistant coaches, athletic director or school principal in case you are not present in an emergency. Keep a copy of the roster with you at all times.
