How to Create a Fan Sign

Making a sign for your favorite sports team and taking it to a game can be one of the more enjoyable elements of the live sporting experience. Creating a fan sign allows you to show both your own personal creativity and also your support for your team or favorite athlete. There are infinite possibilities when creating a sign, and you'll need only a few basic art supplies.

      Choose a poster board color that matches one of your team's colors. Most teams have two or three colors that are commonly associated with them, so your fan sign should ideally match those colors. Your sign should be at least 22 inches by 28 inches (standard poster board size) so people can see it from a distance.

      Write a message with a colored marker that is either black, due to its visibility, or the other team color. If the team has a dark and a light color, like yellow and green, use the lighter color (yellow) for the poster board and the darker color (green) for the writing. The saying on the sign can be about a specific player or be directed at the team as a whole. Keep the message short and to the point so someone can read it quickly. If your team has any specific slogans or sayings associated with it, you can include them or use them for inspiration. You can also make mention of any recent stats or personality traits of any star players or performers.

      Glue a photo to the sign or draw a logo or cartoon to give the sign more visual flair. The image should be somehow related to the statement on the sign. For example, if your sign is about how great a player is, the picture could be that player performing a difficult play.

      Add additional visuals such as glitter or decals to the sign to make it stand out more from other signs around you.

      Verify your facts are right before bringing the sign to an event. If you're citing a player's stats, you'll look foolish and can be called out by other fans if your stats are wrong or outdated.
