How to Run a Hockey Team

1
Familiarize yourself with the specific rules set by your league regarding recruiting players and running the team. In house league hockey, for example, all players must come from a fixed geographic area around your city. In higher levels of the sport, you have permission to recruit from a larger area.
-
2
Hire a coaching staff if you don't plan on coaching the team yourself. Even if you wish to hold the role of head coach, you'll need to hire at least one assistant coach and may choose additional coaches depending on the level of the team. At higher levels, a goaltending coach and strength and conditioning coach are usually part of the coaching staff.
-
3
Hire a staff to help you run the day-to-day operations of the team. If the team is made up of young players, you can likely run the team by yourself. But if you have other obligations and your team's players are 16 or above and play in a competitive league, an office assistant will come in handy. Likewise, hire team staff such as a trainer and equipment manager.
-
4
Work with the coaching staff to hold tryouts to evaluate players. If you run a house league team, you likely won't have tryouts, as per league rules. Competitive teams, however, require tryouts so that the coaching staff can recruit the best team possible. If you have good hockey sense, take part in the recruiting process. If not, leave this process up to the coaching staff.

5
Compile and execute a lengthy list of other tasks such as buying jerseys and uniforms, outfitting a dressing room, arranging a contract with a bus line for traveling to road games, seeking advertising sponsors for the team and hiring parent volunteers to help with fundraising and other small projects as they arise.
