How to Remove Shimano Freehubs
The freehub is an axle assembly most commonly found on the rear wheel of a bicycle. It is important that proper care be taken of your bicycle to ensure you don't take a fall as a result of malfunction, and as a result, the need to replace your freehub may arise. Removing a freehub is a simple and quick process.
Things You'll Need
- Chain whip
- Lockring tool
- Adjustable wrench
- 10 mm Allen key

Wrap the chain whip around the second-largest sprocket, or set of teeth.

Insert the lockring tool into the lockring--the hole running down the center of the hub--and the wrench securely over the hexagon fitting of the lockring tool.

Hold the chain whip steady, and turn the wrench counter-clockwise to loosen the lockring until it can be removed.

Remove the cassette from the freehub.

Insert the Allen key into the freehub.

Turn the key counterclockwise until the hub is loose enough to be removed.
