How to Remove a BMX Back Bearing

BMX biking is a sport that includes racing and trick competitions. Constant use of the bike will cause damage that needs repair. The rear bearings on the BMX bike enable the tire to spin smoothly when in use. Over time, these bearings will become worn down and will not allow the tire to spin as freely. If you hear a grinding or clicking when the rear tire moves, that is an indication that the rear bearings need to be removed and replaced.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the bike so the rear wheel can be removed. Either place the tire upside down, resting on its seat and handlebars, or hang from a work shed wall to allow yourself to remove the back tire.

    • 2

Insert the freewheel removal tool into the center of the wheel axle and pry out the tire cog. Turning the removal tool to the left will loosen the cog so you can slide it out from the center of the wheel.

    • 3

Hold the cog over a clean, empty bucket. Small pieces may fall from the assembled cog as you remove it from the wheel. Holding the cog over the bucket will ensure that the pieces fall in an area that you will be able to find them when needed.

    • 4

Use a wrench to loosen the locknut and cone from the side of the wheel opposite of the bike chain. The axle will now slide from the center of the tire.

    • 5

Remove the bearings from the center of the axle. Bearings will be positioned on both ends of the axle so be sure to remove all of them.

    • 6

Use a towel to clean the axle of any dirt, grease or grime before installing new bearings or replacing the old bearings.
