How to Take Apart a BMX Driver
BMX bikes employ a cassette-type rear hub setup with single-gear drivers, instead of the multi-gear setups found on other bikes. This leaves BMX bikes without the ability to employ multiple gear ratios, but such ratios are unnecessary in BMX stunt riding and other applications. Over time and with constant use, the drivers wear down, creating a need for eventual replacement. Removing the driver is a relatively simple task that only requires a few common tools.

1
Loosen the nuts located on each side of the axle with an adjustable wrench. Slide the wheel forward until the chain loosens, and then slip the chain off the crank.
-
2
Slip the chain off the driver and set it aside. Push the rear wheel backwards from the BMX bike's frame.
-
3
Remove the bolt from the driver side of the hub. Pry the driver-side collar away from the hub with a slotted screwdriver.
-
4
Pull the driver away from the hub by hand while turning the driver backwards. Inspect the driver for wear or damage.
