How to Drain Out Oil in a Yamaha Model 1000
To drain out the oil on a Yamaha 1000, also known as a Yamaha R1, you'll need to remove the fairings and be prepared to store the oil until you can dispose of it properly at an oil recycling location. You'll also want to replace your oil filter to ensure that any metal flakes and debris from the old oil do not re-enter the lubrication system. Depending on how hard you run your bike, you'll want to replace the oil and filter every 1,000 to 2,000 miles. For bikes that are raced or run hard, oil changes may be more frequent to ensure peak performance.
Things You'll Need
- Screwdriver
- Socket wrench set
- Oil catch pan

1
Unscrew the fairing screws with a screwdriver, pulling the fairings off by hand. With the side fairings removed, you can access the drain plug at the base of the engine block.
-
2
Slide the oil catch pan into place, putting the bike on its side kickstand to drain the most oil from the engine. Unscrew the drain bolt with a socket wrench and allow it to drop into the catch pan. You may retrieve it later.
-
3
Unscrew the filter on the forward portion of the engine block, once the majority of oil has drained from the engine, using a channel-lock. Discard the oil filter. Slide the oil catch pan away from the bike and seal it.
