Trails for Dirt Bikes in Maryland

Maryland's dirt-biking opportunities should satisfy those motocross riders who prefer racing on artificially-watered tracks and those who prefer speeding through pristine woods. Most of the state's tracks are either at motocross parks like Budds Creek or in the state forests. However, even Budds Creek is a natural terrain park in the forests of Southern Maryland, so nature is not lost to riders who attend its practices or races.
  1. Budds Creek

    • The site of two World Motocross U.S. Grand Prixs, this motocross park is in the forests of Southern Maryland in Mechanicsville. It has a natural terrain track whose rotation switches every year. Besides being a Pro National track, it also hosts several amateur competitions every year and a motocross school. The track is available for private rentals, and the cost is $500 per day. Daily admission for adults is $15.

    Green Ridge State Forest

    • Green Ridge State Forest is a 46,000-acre oak-hickory forest which also has access to the Potomac River. The forest offers a clearly-marked 18-mile off-road vehicle circuit with many scenic views of the rugged terrain. To use the trail, riders should be over 18. Riders must buy and display a Department of Natural Resources Off-Road Vehicle permit, available at the Green Ridge Forest Park headquarters.

    Potomac-Garrett State Forest

    • The Potomac-Garret State Forest on the West Virginia border has two trails for motocross riding: the Piney Mountain Trail and the Garrett Trail. The former is 2.7 miles in length and begins at the Sang Run-Cranesville Road. From December 15 to March 15, only snowmobiles may use the trail. The Garrett Trail begins at the Cranesville Road and also only permits snowmobiles during the allotted winter months. Riders must have the Maryland Department of Natural Resources permit sticker in order to ride.
