How do I Ride a CR 500 in the Woods?

Honda made the CR 500 from 1984 to 2001. It is a two-stroke, 500cc machine that puts out nearly 60 horsepower (varying slightly depending on the year of make). Nowadays, manfacturers make hardly any two-stroke motocross bikes, as the industry has moved on in favor of the four-stroke instead. Despite other advantages, four-strokes tend to be heavier relative to the power of the machine, which is a distinct disadvantage when it comes to off-roading. The CR 500 is an ideal bike for tight woods riding due to its two-stroke weight economy, its slim frame and its lower-end torque.

Instructions

    • 1

Put proper off-road tires on the bike. If you have been using slicks to ride it on tarmac, or town and country tires, which are halfway between road tires and off-road tires and suitable really only for tarmac and green laning, these will not perform well in the woods.

    • 2

Adjust the suspension if you feel that it needs it after doing a trial run. You will most likely need the suspension to be softer for woods riding than for many other types of terrain.

    • 3

Add a flywheel weight to improve traction. This add-on is beneficial for riding in the woods, increasing power lower down and mid-range. However, it is not really necessary until you are an experienced woods rider keen to find performance-enhancing additions.
