Campsites in Georgia With ATV Trails

Georgia's mountains and forests are a beautiful place to ride ATVs. The United States Forestry Service (USFS) embraces off-roaders with a series of trails through the state's national forests. Several, like the Oakey Mountain system, have small campgrounds. You can also find private ATV and off-roading parks such as H&H or Highland Park. With trails ranging from child-friendly to highly technical, you can ride at any level, and you can camp overnight to get started as early as possible.
  1. Oakey Mountain OHV Trail System

    • The USFS has two national forests in Georgia. These offer you miles of trails, and the Oakley Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Trail System has a six-site campground so you can play all day. The campground gives you access to the both the Oakey Mountain system and the Cigarette Mountain trailhead. You need a permit to ride OHVs, but at $5 a head it's not onerous, and you can also buy an annual pass for $50. The campground is primitive, offering water and vault toilets, though its sites do have tables, grills and lantern posts. The access road is not suitable for RVs.

The Oakley Mountain trail is an advanced two-way trail, nearly six miles long, with up to a 35 percent grade. You will negotiate rocks and blind curves, and children must be accompanied by an adult with a driver's license.

    H&H ATV Ride Park

    • Started by a championship drag racer, Chip Horton, the H&H ATV Ride Park allows camping so you can enjoy a full day of off-roading. The park is on Goose Creek and has 40 acres of trails and tracks. There is an admission fee, even for spectacors, and adults must sign for minors. You can either take advantage of free primitive camping or use RV hookups for a fee. The site hosts events from hill climbing to racing, and other activities include fishing and hiking. The rules here lean toward bluntness: No alcohol, no profanity, no stupidity. This is a family-oriented park, and you can book ATV riding parties for your kids.
