How to Do the FMX Cliffhanger Trick

The Freestyle Motocross (FMX) Cliffhanger is one of many tricks created and performed by FMX riders during competitions in which they try to complete the most difficult tricks in order to get the most points and win the event. These tricks are used in both Big Air (or Best Trick) events and standard Freestyle Motocross routines.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your feet under the handlebars. Once you've ramped up into the air, you're going to pop up and put your feet underneath the handlebars of your motorcycle. In some variations, a rider may actually put his feet above the handlebars, thus increasing the difficulty and point value of the trick.

    • 2

Let go of the handlebars. The FMX Cliffhanger trick is one trick where the rider will take his hands off the bike to get into position. Prior to removing your hands, you're going to push your body up and off the bike to prepare for the next stage of the trick.

    • 3

Stand up, so to speak. You're going to push your body into an upright position like you're standing up, but still keep your feet tucked under the handlebars and raise your hands over your head. The ending position gives the impression that the rider is standing over a cliff.

Get ready to land. Once you've completed the entire FMX Cliffhanger trick, bring your body back down to the motorcycle and put your feet and hands back into regular riding position so you're prepared to land correctly.

    • 5

Vary your landing. To enhance your trick and possibly glean extra points from the judge, try a more challenging landing after completing the FMX Cliffhanger trick. For example, you can do a no foot or no hands landing to increase the "wow" factor.
