How to Perform Freestyle Motocross Tricks

Performing Freestyle Motocross or FMX tricks bring "oohs" and "ahs" from fascinated spectators as a rider launches himself, and his bike, high into the air, gyrating and flipping, end over end, before returning safely to the ground. Take off ramps propel the stunt performers to amazing heights as they do gravity-defying tricks. There are several basic stunts a potential FMX rider can learn.

Instructions

Begin the "Lookover" just after the bike leaves the ramp. Twist your head and body to the side, while remaining firmly on the pegs. Head positioning is an important basic to develop as it will be used in more difficult jumps. As soon as the bike begins its descent quickly return your head to a forward position.

Center your weight when attempting the "Karate Kick." When the bike is level in the air, begin by removing your foot just slightly to get the feel. As you become comfortable with that, start to kick out until you are able to safely perform a side kick and return your foot to the peg before landing.

Train to perform the "One Hander" by opening up your hand while in the air, but still keeping your palm touching the handlebar. When you can do that successfully, try removing your hand a little at a time from the bar, until you can confidently put it all the way to the side and back before landing.

Prepare for the "No Footer" trick by gradually easing the pressure of both feet from the pegs while you are in the air. Practice the trick many times. As you become more confident, lift your feet increasingly, until you can safely kick both out to the sides and return them to the pegs before landing. This basic Freestyle Motocross trick is the foundation for more difficult tricks done by the professionals.
