How to Race at Salton Sea
Rooster tails have been flying and world records have been falling here since the '50s. But don't expect to just dump your boat off your trailer and start racing. Competition is tightly controlled by the American Power Boat Association (APBA). Get in on the fun legally, safely and lucratively.

1
Contact the American Power Boat Association (APBA) and find out the dates of the next planned Salton Sea Speedweek event. It typically happens the first weekend in December.
-
2
Decide which of APBA's five different Salton Sea Speedweek racing classes you wish to enter. This is determined by the type of craft you will be racing.
-
3
Study APBA's specifications for the type of craft you wish to race. If your boat does not meet the specifications exactly, you won't be allowed to race.
-
4
Prepare your boat or personal water craft to ensure that it strictly adheres to APBA's safety standards. It will have to pass a safety inspection before you are let out on the water.
-
5
Collect all necessary safety equipment based on APBA's rules and regulations. At a minimum, each pilot or driver will need a personal floation device and a helmet during racing. Each craft will require a fire extinguisher on board.
-
6
Prepare an entry form and pay the entry fee well in advance of the event. Typically APBA accepts entries four months ahead of Speedweek, and events can fill up quickly.
-
7
Assemble maintenance provisions. Each racing craft requires extra parts, tools and plenty of fuel to be competitive.
-
8
Plan to camp. It is most practical for racers to stay close to the water, not at area motels.
