How to Remove the Starter From a 1999 Polaris ATV

- Screwdriver
- Pulling tool for primary and secondary clutches
- Socket set
- Tapping hammer

Remove the left foot ground padding by removing the screws that secure it on the outside edge.

Remove the primary clutch belt cover by removing the two screws that secure it underneath the left steering handle.

Remove the primary clutch belt using the pulling tool. First remove the main bolt, and then slide the threaded shaft of the pulling tool into the hole created by the removed bolt. Slide the puller arms onto the back of the clutch. Torque the puller by hand until the clutch comes free.

Remove the secondary clutch belt cover by removing the screws that secure it along the left-rear of the seating area.

Remove the secondary clutch belt by using the pulling tool in the same manner you used it to remove the primary clutch.

Remove the bolts that secure the casing behind where the primary clutch was. There should be three bolts that secure the casing to the main body and three bolts that secure the casing to the transmission.

Remove the casing to expose the starter.

Remove the two bolts that secure the starter using a socket wrench.

Remove the electrical cable from the starter by pulling it directly out of its connector.

Remove the starter. You may have to tap it gently with a hammer until it loosens from its place.
