How Do I Push Without Falling on a Skateboard?

Professionals make riding a skateboard look easy, but you will soon learn it takes a lot of leg strength to operate a skateboard properly. One major fear for beginner skaters is falling when they try to push off on the board. If you don't plant your feet on the board properly, your momentum can cause the board to slide out from under you, leading to a painful fall. Once you acquaint yourself with your board, though, pushing yourself forward is a simple matter.

Instructions

Place your dominant foot (most people have a dominant foot on the same side as their dominant hand) near the nose of your board. Bend your knee forward slightly to keep the board from shooting out from underneath you. Your foot should be just below your hip with your knee jutting forward by a few inches.

Lean forward slightly and push yourself forward using your non-dominant foot. Start with a small push and set your non-dominant foot on the back of the board. Push off again whenever you need more momentum.

Keep your dominant foot firmly planted on the front end of the board. You need your foot to stay firm to keep the board securely underneath you. If your foot slips, the board has a chance of shooting off and making you fall.
