How to Do a Variel Flip

The variel flip is an intermediate skateboarding trick that involves an aerial flip and a 180 degree rotation. The variel flip combines two individual skateboarding tricks known as the kickflip and pop shuv-it. Street skaters often perform the variel flip over urban obstacles including fire hydrants and grass gaps. Professional skateboarder Kelly Hart recommends learning the variel flip in a training facility that features a smooth floor. (see References 1) Mastering the proper toe flick will allow you to land the variel flip consistently.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the skateboard forward until you reach a comfortable speed. Slide your lead foot towards the middle of the deck. Hang your heel off the edge of the board to position your lead foot in the variel flip position.

    • 2

Align your back foot on the elevated rear of the skateboard known as the tail. Bend your knees slightly to avoid losing control of the board. Hold your arms parallel to the ground for increased balance.

    • 3

Apply downward pressure to the concave section of the skateboard tail. Extend your legs to jump vertically as you hear the tail make contact with the ground. Lift your knees to allow the skateboard wheels to ascend off the pavement.

    • 4

Kick the toes of your lead foot against the inside edge of the board. Thrust your opposing foot in a backwards direction to rotate the board in the air. Raise your shoes to allow the skateboard to flip and spin beneath you.

    • 5

Lower your lead foot to catch the board as it completes the variel flip. Align your back foot over the tail of the board to ensure a balanced landing. Bend your knees to absorb the impact as the wheels descend onto the pavement.
