How to Ollie With Descriptive Steps

The ollie is one of the most basic skateboard tricks and is an essential step in learning more difficult tricks. With the ollie, you are popping your board in the air underneath you while you jump. You can learn to ollie while standing stationary on your board but it is better to learn to ollie while moving as you'll be moving when doing tricks in the future. Make sure you have a solid ollie or the rest of your tricks will be sloppy.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the ball of your front foot on the center of the board a couple of inches behind the front bolts. Position your back foot on the center of the tail.

    • 2

Bend your knees and stay loose. Maintain a position that makes you feel balanced and comfortable.

    • 3

Push down quickly on the tail of the board popping it off the ground as you jump and slide your front foot up the board toward the nose. Sliding your front foot up will level out the board underneath you. Stay centered over the board while in the air.

    • 4

Keep your body straight in the air -- not turning side to side -- so that it is easy to land and ride away smoothly. Keep your shoulders straight and parallel with the board. If you open or close your shoulders, your lower body will follow and you will land sideways.

    • 5

Keep your knees bent as your land. Try to land with your feet over the bolts or as close to it as possible.

    • 6

Do tons of them. See how high you can pop them. The better your ollie, the tighter the rest of your skating will be.
