How to Lip a Ramp

While street skaters execute the lip on urban obstacles such as handrails and planter ledges, transition skaters perform the lip at the top edge of the ramp known as the coping. The lip is an intermediate trick that involves sliding across an obstacle with the underside of the skateboard. The Berrics recommends keeping your skateboard perpendicular to the obstacle when performing the lip slide. Practice on a small ramp at your local skateboard park to get comfortable with the necessary movements.

Instructions

    • 1

Align your lead foot over the front bolts of the skateboard. Lower your opposing foot onto the pavement. Lean forward while pushing off the ground to propel your skateboard forward.

    • 2

Apply pressure to your heels or toes to steer the skateboard towards the ramp. Bend your knees as the front wheels of the skateboard roll up the ramp face. Slide your lead foot towards the middle of the skateboard as you approach the coping.

    • 3

Apply downward pressure to the rear of the board to lift the front wheels. Jump vertically while lifting your knees to your chest. Swing your shoulders to rotate the board 180 degrees.

    • 4

Bend your knees as the underside of the board lands on the top lip of the ramp. Lean forward as the board slides across the coping. Push down on the nose of the board to reenter the ramp.

    • 5

Lower your rear wheels onto the sloping ramp face. Bend your knees as you roll down the ramp. Practice the lip slide until you can perform the trick consistently.
