How to do a Vertical on a Skateboard

Skating vertical or "vert" is a type of skateboarding where the rider skates on a half-pipe or skate-bowl. Just maneuvering into a bowl or down and up a half-pipe ramp can take some getting used to so beginner vert skaters will want to simply get a feel for skating into a ramp or bowl. Once a rider feels comfortable skating up and down a ramp, they can begin to attempt performing tricks as well. Here are some tips to get you started in vertical skating.

Instructions

Find a line for yourself when you are at the top of a drop off into a half-pipe or bowl. If it is your first time riding vertical, don't skate directly into another ramp. Instead, look for a flat area away from other skaters you can head toward once you have dropped off.

Place the backend or "tail" of your board along the edge of the ramp or drop off. All of the wheels on the skateboard, including the back ones, will be suspended in the air over the ramp. Hold your skateboard in place with your back foot. This will cause the board to angle slightly up. When you are ready to take the plunge, put your front foot on the board, over the front trucks of your skateboard, with all your weight. When you feel the front tires hit the ramp, bend your knees and ride out the fall.

Attempt to ride up the other side of the half-pipe or bowl. Keep your weight on the foot closest to the direction you are traveling. As you start to lose speed going up the ramp, push out with your knees as if you are trying to push the board higher up the ramp. When the skateboard starts to go back in the other direction, put your weight back onto the board with your back foot, as you will be traveling backwards. As you practice, you may want to pivot as you fall back. This will place your front foot in the direction you are traveling.

Build your speed and comfort level slowly. Eventually you can add jumps where you are getting actual air out of the bowl or half-pipe. Until then, slow and steady wins the race.
