How to Get Fitted for Skateboard Pads

Skateboard pads help to keep the skateboarder safe when he falls, trips or fails to complete a stunt that he had planned. It is important to protect your body while skateboarding to help prevent broken bones or scraped skin when you hit the pavement. Properly fitted pads will not slide up and down on the body, and the pads will not be so tight that circulation is cut off.

Measure your arm to get fitted for elbow pads that will protect your arms while skateboarding. Start from your wrist up to about three inches above your elbow. This will give you a general idea of the length of elbow pad that you need. Elbow pads are adjustable and come with straps that allow you to make sure that the pad is not too tight or too loose. Place your finger between the elbow pad and your arm to make sure that it is not too tight. Elbow pads can range in size from youth 7.5 to adult 15.5, measured in inches.

Measure your head. Start at your forehead and wrap the tape measure around to the back of your head and return to the forehead. Your helmet should fit your head snugly and the helmet is usually sized in inches. The helmet you wear while skateboarding should not be able to move on your head. Helmet sizes range from 18 inches in the youth sizes to 24 inches in adult sizes.

Measure your legs to get the correct size of knee guards. Knee guards will protect your knees and legs from getting banged up while skateboarding. Measure from the middle of your kneecap to the inside of your knee. You can also measure from the middle of the kneecap down to the middle of your calf. Knee guards, or shin guards as they are sometimes called, range in size from 7 to 17 inches. You should be able to place a finger between the guard and your knee comfortably once the knee guard is on.
