How to Make a Skateboard Sling Out of Duct Tape

A skateboard sling, like "Slingz", is a wrap-around skateboard strap that allows the skater to wear the board over shoulder like a backpack. A skateboard sling resembles a guitar strap. A manufactured skateboard sling is usually made of a sturdy fabric and has loops that hook on to the wheels. A similar device can be made at home for a fraction of the cost. A skateboard sling can even be made with duct tape.

Measure the duct tape to create wheel loops. Lay the skateboard on a table or flat surface with the wheel side up. Measure the circumference of a wheel with the tape measure. Cut a piece of duct tape twice as long as the circumference of the wheel.

    • 2

Make the wheel loops. Fold the tape in half so that it adheres to itself and you have a duct tape loop. Try and slide it over the wheel to make sure it fits. Reinforce this loop with another layer of duct tape. Make two loops as they will attach to the straps and hold the board in place when worn.

Make a strap for the skateboard sling. Use a tape measure to calculate how much duct tape you'll need to make the strap. The strap should be long enough so that it hangs over the chest diagonally when the loops are securely wrapped around the wheels. Add 4 inches to this measurement as you'll need the extra length to fasten the loops to the strap.

Attach the newly made strap to the loops. There should be 2 additional inches on either side of the tape cut for the strap. Wrap one end of the tape through of one of the loops and fold it closed on itself. Reinforce this by wrapping the tape twice. Repeat this step on the other loop to make a long strap with two wheel loops.

Cover the exposed side of the strap duct tape with another piece of duct tape. This way there is no exposed adhesive. This step will also provide reinforcement for the newly made strap.

Try the skateboard sling on for size. The completed carrier will hold the skateboard in place across the back, with the wheels facing out. If it fits too tightly, just stretch the strap by hand until you are comfortable.
