Skateboard Helmet Safety

Skateboarding is a popular sport, and as with all sports, there are safety measures that should be taken. Wearing a helmet is the best way to help prevent head injuries as most result from the absence of protective gear, says Safe Kids Canada.
  1. Head Injury Statistics

    • Every year, about 16,500 individuals are estimated to receive traumatic brain injury, according to Brain and Spinal Cord. Children are the most susceptible, so every precaution needs to be taken.

    Type of Helmet

    • There are helmets specifically designed for skateboarding. They protect the head against repeated crashes and cover more of the back of the head than bicycle helmets.

    Standards

    • According to the Bicycle Safety Helmet Institute, true skateboard helmets should meet the safety standard ASTM F1492, which should be printed on a sticker inside the helmet.

    Fit

    • The helmet should fit snugly on the head, but still be comfortable, and the straps should be firmly secured. Ask a professional to assist you with proper fitting when purchasing it.
