Minnesota Skateboard Parks

Minnesota has a number of public and privately-owned skateparks that cater to every age and experience level. From outdoor to indoor street courses, to massive concrete bowls, Minnesota has options for all varieties of skaters. For inexperienced skaters looking for training, several facilities also offer lessons from professionals instructors.
  1. Showcase Skatepark

    • With 17,5000 square feet of space, Showcase is one of the largest, if not the largest indoor skatepark in Minnesota. Boasting one of the only foam pits in the city, skaters can practice big air tricks or jumps and expect a safe and cushioned landing. BMX riders are welcome, too, so skaters and bikers can both take advantage of the ramps. This park has options for both street and vert skaters. With a variety of bowls, halfpipes, ramps and grind rails, Showcase is designed for both novice and experienced skaters. All skaters must wear a helmet, and the park offers spring break rates when school is out of session. On Saturdays the park is open until midnight and anyone under 18 must get their legal guardian to sign a waiver.

    YMCA Tri-City Skatepark

    • The first of it's kind in the Upper Midwest, the YMCA Tri-City Skatepark is a 17,000-square-foot outdoor bowl that snakes around itself ranging in depth from 4 to 11 feet. Don't expect any pre-fab ramps here though; the YMCA Tri-City Skatepark is entirely concrete. It was designed by the experts at Seattle based design and architecture company Grindline, which also built--at a whopping 45,000 square feet--the largest skatepark in Houston, Texas. Skateboarders, in-line skaters, and BMX riders are all welcome. Group rentals, camps and lessons are available for kids and as of 2010 a daily pass is only $5 for YMCA members and residents of Edina, Richfield, and Bloomington.

    3rd Lair

    • Open since 1997, 3rd Lair is a skateboarder-owned and operated facility catering to kids, although there is no age limit to skate. With an indoor and outdoor street course that includes two bowls, and 25,000 square feet of ramps and rails, the park is open rain or shine. Hosting several amateur contests throughout the year as well as skate camps, an all-girls skate club and skate clinics taught by trained instructors, 3rd Lair gives inexperienced skaters a place to polish their skills. They invite anyone with wheels (the website includes wheelchairs, unicycles, scooters and even remote control cars), although bikes are only permitted in the street course. 3rd Lair has two locations in Minnesota, an in-house equipment store, and a rental shop.

    New Ulm Skatepark

    • New Ulm Skatepark is an outdoor city-owned facility and is free to the public. Open from the early mornings until late at night, there is no age limit and the Parks Department requires all skaters to wear a helmet and pads. Skateboarders and in-line skaters are welcome, however bikes are not permitted. The Parks Department highly recommends skateboarders to refrain from using the facility when it is raining. There are several humps, rails and ramps and due to their low height this is an excellent park for novice and young skateboarders. There is a picnic table and parking nearby in case parents are looking for somewhere to relax while the kids do their thing.

    Owatonna Skatepark

    • Owatonna Skate Park is a city-owned outdoor skatepark that stays open from mid-afternoon until the early evenings. Skaters can register for a full season pass or pay per day. No one under 6 years old is allowed to skate and skaters under 18 must wear elbow and knee pads that they can rent from the park. A park designed with beginners in mind, there are numerous launch ramps, quarter pipes and grind rails but nothing over 5 feet. Skateboarders, BMX riders and in-line skaters are permitted although scooters are not allowed in the facility.
