How to Clean Rust Off of a Bike

Bicycles offer an alternative way to get around, while also providing exercise. Many bicycle components are made of metal, which means they are prone to rust. During the manufacturing process, the metal parts of the bike are coated with a rust-proof substance. This protective coating eventually wears off, allowing rain, humidity and sunshine to accelerate rust formation. Regular maintenance includes examining the bike for rust and removing it.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape off surface rust with a scrubbing pad or brush.

    • 2

Apply mineral oil with a paper towel to rusty areas of the bike. Wait 15 to 30 minutes for the oil to soak into the rust. Scrub off the rust with a scrubbing pad or brush. Wet a paper towel and wipe off the rust and mineral oil. Dry completely.

Apply naval jelly with a paper towel to remove any remaining rust. Wait several minutes. Use a fresh paper towel to wipe off the rust, then clean the area with a damp paper towel. Navel jelly has phosphoric acid, which dissolves the rust on the bike.
