How to Clean Rust Off of a Chrome Bike

Metal structures are plated with chrome to provide both a decorative finish as well as protective coating. A bike, which must withstand the outdoor elements, often has a chrome-plated body. Should rust ever appear on the bike, it's not the chrome that is rusting but a separate metal, which usually means that some of the chrome has been chipped away or there is another material on top of the chrome that is oxidizing. Fortunately, it is not difficult to clean rust off of a chrome bike.

  • Brass wool
  • Liquid metal polish
  • Polishing rag

      Spray and wipe down the bike with water to remove any dirt or loose debris

      Pour some of the liquid metal polish onto the brass wool. Steel wool is also an option, however it is slightly more abrasive and stands a higher chance of scratching off the chrome plating than brass wool does.

      Rub the brass wool in a firm, circular motion over the rusted areas. The bits of rust should come off fairly easily.

      Rub a metal polishing cloth over the bike after cleaning to achieve a shinier finish
