How to Make a Twist Board

Regular workouts can become dreary, redundant routines that your mind and body quickly acclimate to. One effective way of amping up your fitness regime is to add a twist board. Also known as wobble or balance boards, these boards test your balance and force you to utilize more of your body's overall strength during routine exercises. They're an efficient vehicle to improve smaller muscles less targeted by isolated exercises, not to mention cardiovascular health. A twist board can be made at home using a few affordable materials.

  • 4-by-6 inch diameter, 18-inch long pipe

Cut a paper pattern for the board, approximately 20-by-30 inches. An oval shape is recommended, but any size and shape can be made according to your preferences. Trace the pattern onto the plywood and cut out the shape using the hacksaw.

Using the same measurements as your pattern, cut two bumpers, about 2 inches wide, from the excess plywood and attach them to the sides of your board with glue or nails. Sand the entire board until smooth.

Secure the friction tape to the pipe; add more tape to the top of your board if desired. Your board is now complete; lay it on top of the pipe and have fun wobbling!
