How to Make a Viking Press

The Viking press is a specific exercise, most commonly seen as part of "Strongman" competitions. The difficulty for training for these competitions is the lack of training equipment available for the exercises at traditional gyms. Fortunately, standard weight-lifting equipment at most gyms can be modified to allow you to train for this exercise. Although you will need to practice and adjust the weights to suit your abilities, you will be able to train this exercise on a regular basis and increase your overall strength.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the height of one side of the power rack to shoulder height. Set the height of the other side lower. Begin with one notch lower and adjust as needed.

    • 2

Place two barbells on the power rack. Space them approximately two feet apart.

    • 3

Place weights on the lower part of the barbell. Secure them with a clamp. Optionally you can use a band to maintain the distance of the barbells.

    • 4

Place a smaller amount of weight on the higher end of the barbell. Secure with a clamp and the resistance band if preferred.

    • 5

Perform the Viking press by standing outside the power rack on the side with the lower end of the barbells, facing toward the higher end of the barbells. Grasp the barbells in each hand and press overhead.
