How to Make a Mat Slide

Whether you're using a mat slide to train for hockey or inline skating, or you use it for exercise, the mat slide is a work-out tool that's fun and easy to use. You can make your own mat slide that's budget-friendly and much less expensive than most of the ones sold in stores. Making your own also allows you to customize the width and the length of your mat slide so you can increase the challenge as you increase your skills and stamina.

Things You'll Need

  • Laminate wood sheet
  • Tape measure
  • Saw
  • 2-by-4-inch lumber
  • Drill
  • Screws
  • Foam rubber
  • Hook-and-loop tape

      Cut a piece of sheet laminate wood to 7 feet long and 3 feet wide.

      Cut two 2-by-4s to 3 feet long. Place one 2-by-4 at each end of the laminate wood. Drill through the laminate wood and into the 2-by-4s to create the stops for your slide mat. Use at least three screws on each end.

      Cut thick, foam rubber to 3 feet lengths, creating bumpers for either end of the mat slide. Use heavy-duty hook-and-loop tape that is self-adhesive to connect the bumpers to the stops.

      Apply wood wax as needed to keep the mat slide slippery enough to slide across.
