DIY Power Cage

A power cage is also known as a squat rack, squat cage or power rack. It is a rectangular piece of exercise equipment designed to support barbells for the person working out. Its primary purpose is safety and creating an optimal starting point for squats. Since the structure must support heavy weight, it must be constructed of strong materials and built to last. The builder must have a working knowledge of welding.

Things You'll Need

  • Welding kit
  • Eight square steel beams (4 feet each)
  • Four square-pegged steel beams (8 feet each)
  • Six steel pegs that fit into the pegged holes of the beam

Instructions

      Arrange four of the 4-foot steel beams in a square. Weld the beams together, forming a square shape.

      Arrange another four of the 4-foot steel beams in a square. Weld the beams together, forming a square shape.

      Weld each 8-foot pegged steel beam to the corners of one of the squares. Keep the pegged holes facing into the cage.

      Weld the other end of the 8-foot beams to the corners of the 4-by-4-foot square. The final product should look like a rectangle.

      Insert steel pegs into the pegged holes of the cage. The pegs should be positioned for the starting point of the barbell and also a foot or so below the starting position for safety. Another set of pegs can be set at waist level for curls.
