How to Repair a StairMaster

StairMaster is a type of climbing fitness machine that mimics the act of walking up stairs. These are common exercise machines found at numerous fitness centers across the world. The StairMaster works by requiring pressure on one of the two steps, making the gears in the opposite step go up. Like most exercise machines, a StairMaster needs maintenance over time as wear and tear may occur. A few simple at-home steps can help you repair the StairMaster.

Instructions

Turn off the StairMaster and unplug it from the electrical connection. Detach the bottom side covers on the StairMaster. The covers should pop off or may require unscrewing in some models. Inspect the undercarriage and use an air hose to remove any dust or dirt that has built up.

    • 2

Check the tension on the machine's belt. If the belt is loose, it may give off a clicking noise. Tighten the belt using a socket wrench. If there are any cracks in the belt, be sure to replace it to avoid damage to the machine's motor.

    • 3

Inspect the StairMaster's chain. This chain is what helps the steps move up and down. Make sure the chain links are all intact and the chain is fully connected. Remove the chain and obtain a replacement if corroded or broken.

    • 4

Look for any damage around the pedals of the machine. The pedal shaft may have dirt built up or corrosion, so wipe it off with a clean cloth. Consider placing a bit of grease on the shaft to help the pedals move smoothly. If the pedal shaft is broken or in poor condition, replace it immediately to avoid injury when using the machine.

Ensure all of the electrical wiring is in tact. Wires may come from the motor up to the top of the machine, if your unit has a LED screen. If any wires are touching, they may be causing the machine to ground out. Pull these wires apart and cover any uncoated wires with electrical tape.

Reattach the bottom covers of the machine. Secure these hubs in place with screws if applicable. Plug the machine back into the electrical outlet and turn it on. Keep the machine clean and lubricate any shafts after long periods of use.
