How to Repair a Helmet Liner

Modern helmets have been developed with easily detachable inner liners. Older helmets have liners that are permanent fixtures within the structure and hard to repair. The helmet liner is meant to provide added comfort as you wear the helmet, as well as some additional cushion if an impact against your head occurs. Through consistent use, the inner liner can deteriorate from the friction it encounters with your head, extreme and abrupt temperature changes, and moisture fluctuations that can damage the helmet liner, demanding a repair or replacement.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your helmet in a bright workspace and turn it upside down on a towel or place mat.

    • 2

Locate the plastic pull tabs that are located at the edge of your helmet and are meant to secure the liner of the helmet. Move the cheek pads out and away from the snaps and set them out of the way.

    • 3

Pull each plastic tab that holds the liner to the frame of the helmet to release it from the helmet's base. Gently pull the full liner from your helmet.

    • 4

Scan over the liner to view what needs repair. For a minor rip, apply a thin, stretchy patch that is of a similar composition to the main material used for the liner. This information should be listed in the helmet. Use a sewing machine or sew by hand to apply the small patch around the rip in your liner.

    • 5

Remove a broken tab with pliers and replace the tab with a new one. Sew up any torn or frayed edges that may have developed from the tab removal.

    • 6

Replace your liner in the helmet through aligning all the tabs as they are arranged at the edges of the helmet. Press the liner tabs into the helmet's frame and reattach the tabs and secure them in place. Replace the cheek pads properly to finish.
