How to Repair a Snowmobile Helmet

Snowmobiles are fast and powerful machines that require the use of a safety-certified helmet. Whether or not a helmet can be repaired so that it is safe depends on the problem. Any helmet that has sustained an impact should be thrown away. Snowmobile helmets can be very expensive, but they are only designed to survive an impact, as clearly indicated on the packaging of all new snowmobile helmets on the market. The only repair you should attempt on your own is to replace the face shield on an enclosed helmet. This repair is reasonable, safe and straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the helmet carefully and examine it for any cracks, wear or tear. If you have a broken or cracked face shield on an enclosed helmet, you'll need to replace it.

    • 2

Unclip the round plastic covers from the two screws on each side of the face shield.

    • 3

Unscrew the plastic bolts that hold the face shield in place. Make sure that the replacement shield that you acquire is from the same make and model as the helmet you are repairing. It is important to have a proper fit.

    • 4

Place the new face shield in the downward position on the helmet and screw the plastic bolts back into place. Do not over-tighten the bolts, as they may strip or make the face shield too difficult to move.

    • 5

Move the face shield up and down to ensure that it fits the helmet properly and is secure. If they have been properly tightened, the shield will not pop up when you try the helmet on and rock your head back, and it will not come down unless you move it down with your hand.

      Replace the plastic covers.
