600 Polaris Problems
-
Time Frame
-
On May 19, 2005, CPSC announced a recall of 14,000 Polaris snowmobiles including 600 Polaris models. That recall was revised on August 8, 2006, to include further reports of incidents. On April 7, 2009, CPSC announced another recall of 7,200 more Polaris snowmobiles including multiple other 600 models.
Defects and Risk
-
Polaris initiated the 2005 and 2006 recall after multiple incident reports because a manufacturing defect could cause the fuel tank filter neck to crack at the base where it meets the fuel tank assembly. Polaris initiated the 2009 recall after multiple reports of fuel leaks due to a manufacturing problem that could cause fuel lines to come into contact with one another. Either problem could lead to a fuel leak, which poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers.
Incident Reports
-
According to CPSC, Polaris received nine reports from consumers whose snowmobiles experienced filter neck cracking. Polaris received eight separate reports of fuel leaks due to fuel lines coming into contact with each other.
