How to Size a Balance Ball

Physical therapists first started using balance balls in the 1960s. Today they are available in a range of sizes at fitness centers and stores all over the world. Balance balls at fitness stores usually have a range of appropriate heights listed on their packaging to help you select the right size for your height, but everyone has different body proportions. So the balance ball that has your height listed on its box could still be too big or small. The only way to know for sure is to open one up and test it.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a balance ball. Start with one that has your height listed on the package. Some stores have sample balls available for you to test. If a store doesn't have sample balls available, make sure you will be allowed to return a ball that doesn't fit you.

    • 2

Remove the balance ball from the packaging and use an air pump to inflate it.

    • 3

Check the ball's size in a doorway. Select a doorway of the diameter measurement listed on the ball's box. Use a tape measure or yardstick to measure the opening. Then roll the ball into the opening. It should just barely fit through. Inflate or deflate the ball to adjust the size if necessary.

Take off your shoes if you plan to be barefoot while exercising with the ball. Otherwise, wear the shoes you plan to wear while using the ball.

    • 5

Sit on the ball with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor.

    • 6

Press your heels together and lock your knees together as well. Make sure your heels are directly below your knees so that your lower legs are vertical, not slanted. In this position your knees should be level with your hips if the ball is the right size. It's acceptable if your knees are slightly lower than your hips. If your knees are higher than your hips or much lower than your hips, the ball is the wrong size.

Repeat Steps 2 through 6 with a different sized ball if necessary.
