How Do I Videotape Myself Running?

Videotaping yourself running is a useful way of monitoring your form and technique. Making small adjustments to your running style after observing your technique can deliver large improvements. Although you can't videotape an entire run without the assistance of a friend to accompany you on the route, you can record large portions of a run from a static position.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark out your starting point on the ground in chalk.

    • 2

Place your bag on the chalk. Remove any valuables, such as an iPod or cash.

    • 3

Walk approximately 100 yards away from the bag. As you walk, remove any obstacles, such as rocks and litter.

    • 4

Make a second chalk mark on the ground.

    • 5

Walk 10 yards past the second chalk mark and unpack a tripod and camera.

    • 6
Check the viewfinder to make sure the bag and second mark are in frame.

Extend the telescopic legs of the tripod so the camera stands approximately 36 inches off the ground. If you set the tripod much higher, the camera will be shooting over your head as you get to within a few yards. Because this is the point at which you'll be most prominently filmed, it's essential the camera is positioned to capture your leg and arm movement.

    • 7

Fit the camera on top of the tripod and point it at the bag. Adjust the zoom and angle so you can see the entire distance between the bag and the second chalk mark. Don't zoom in on the bag, as this means you'll be out-of-focus as you approach the camera. Adjust the zoom so it focuses on the second chalk mark without making the bag blurry.

    • 8

Press "Record" on the camera. It's unnecessary to use a timer, as you can simply fast-forward from the start point to when you begin running.

    • 9

Walk back to the start, set the bag to the side and start your run. Run in a straight line between the two chalk marks and don't deviate from the route. Run in your normal style and concentrate on running safely.

    • 10

Press "Stop" on the camera, and then hit "Play" to view the footage. If necessary, film yourself running from the second chalk mark to the first, to get a rear view of your running style.
