Instructions for Washing Vibram FiveFingers

Vibram FiveFingers shoes are used by people who enjoy running barefoot. They conform to the feet and each toe and are intended to reduce knee and joint pain. However, because these shoes don't require socks, they can be a breeding ground for bacteria and stinky situations. Fortunately, Vibram shoes are easy to wash; you'll be back in your barefoot shoes in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Run warm water over the shoes to rinse off all of the dirt prior to disinfecting. Ideally, the water will run clear before you start scrubbing.

    • 2

Using a small container with detergent (a capful is adequate) and a toothbrush, scrub the outside of the shoes. Pay special attention to the space in between the toes and any Velcro straps.

    • 3

Brush the inside of the shoes. Use the toothbrush to get into every crevice of the shoe, including the sockets for the toes. Getting the detergent into every corner of the shoe will kill all of the bacteria that causes that unpleasant odor.

    • 4

Rinse well. Any detergent residue left in the shoe is going to create a soapy mess when you start sweating.

    • 5

Hang the shoes and allow the shoes to dry completely. If you start sweating in a shoe that's already moist, you create a dark, wet environment for bacteria to flourish. It's worth the wait to let the shoes dry completely. Wash them on your day off from running and give them a full day to try.
