How to Measure Mileage When Jogging

If you’re a dedicated runner or jogger, you’ll want to measure your progress regularly. Measuring the distance you jog is particularly important if you’re training for a distance race, because you typically need to run a certain number of miles each week to make sure you’re in shape for the race. Your measuring method may depend on where you like to jog.

Jog on a running track and count your laps. A typical running track is 400 meters long, which is almost exactly 1/4 mile.

    • 2

Run on a path with a marked distance. Some parks set aside dedicated jogging paths. Look for a sign at the path’s starting point that states the path’s distance. You may also find markers along the path designating certain milestones; for example, you may see a marker every 1/2 mile.

    • 3

Map out a jogging path in advance using an online mapping device or a smartphone app, then follow your designated route.

    • 4

Time yourself on a running track or a running path so you know how long it takes to travel a specific distance. For example, if you jog 1 mile in 10 minutes, and you wish to jog for 2 miles on an unmarked path, jog for 20 minutes. Alternatively, use the same principle, but count your steps instead of minutes. Take a pedometer to a track or marked trail to see how many steps you take to jog in 1 mile. Then wear your pedometer on an unmarked trail and jog until you hit your desired number of strides.

Wear or carry a GPS device while you’re running. Some GPS watches, for example, are made specifically for athletes and display information such as your distance, time and speed. Some smartphone apps provide similar information.
