How to Set Up a Bicycle Trainer

Bicycle trainers are training tools that allow cyclists and biking enthusiasts to ride their bikes stationary. A trainer is a device that attaches to the rear of a bicycle that keeps it in a fixed position and allows the rear wheel to rotate with each pedal stroke. The front of the bike, usually raised on a block, remains fixed. Bicycle trainers are often used indoors when riding outside is not possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the trainer from the box, and extend the legs. Place the front wheel of your bicycle on the block. This will keep the bike level as the trainer raises the rear wheel. Secure the resistance unit of the trainer to the rear wheel.

    • 2

Insert the L-bolt into the L-bolt bracket at the back of the resistance unit, and spin clockwise until secure. This will lock the rear wheel to the trainer. Ensure the rear wheel pedals smoothly without moving side to side on the trainer.

For some, Step 2 might be the final step. For others, a quick release mechanism must be installed. Remove the quick release skewer on your bike. Lift the bike, and position the wheel's left skewer directly into the fixed cone of the trainer. Screw in the trainer's quick release device into the bolt action tube.
