How to Make a Gel Pack for Injuries or Pain

Cold therapy eases the aches and pains that may follow exercise, athletics and medical procedures. Sprained muscles, strained ligaments and bruises of all sorts also call for application of cold to reduce swelling. You can buy reusable gel packs at the pharmacy, but you can easily make one at home. Keep one in the freezer so that it’s ready to use at any time.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the water and rubbing alcohol into a zippered freezer bag. Zip the bag closed.

    • 2

Shake the bag gently to combine the liquids.

    • 3

Place the freezer bag inside a second zippered freezer bag. Zip the second bag closed.

    • 4

Place the bag into the freezer for at least one hour. The water-alcohol mixture will cool into a flexible slush.

    • 5

Wrap the gel pack in a towel or washcloth before placing it on your sore spot. Use it for no more than 20 minutes at a time so as not to freeze the skin.
