How to Make Shoe Covers for Cycling

Shoe covers are worn by cyclists looking to keep their feet warm in cold riding conditions. They also help keep feet dry in wet weather. Patented shoe covers can be purchased, and can cost anywhere from $20 to $100. Cycling shoe covers are a relatively simple design, however, and an effective pair can be made at home with a few common items.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a sturdy plastic garbage bag and lay it on the ground in front of you. With your scissors, cut a swatch from the bag, large enough to envelope your foot and wrap comfortably above your ankles.

    • 2

Cut a hole in the bottom of the swatch for your shoe's cleat, if the shoe has one. This will allow your shoe to be able to clip in to the peddle without interference.

    • 3

Twist all excess from the bag and tape it at three points: 1) just above your ankle; 2) where your heel meets the arch of your foot; and 3) where the ball meets the arch. This will create a snug, waterproof fit for your cycling shoe cover.
