How to Teach Step Aerobics

Introduced to the world in 1989, step aerobics took the fitness world by storm, introducing an athletic option that was different than the dance-inspired aerobics previously popular. Step aerobics can be simple or complicated, but all moves are based on building upon the basic step. Teach step aerobics for fitness and fun.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce those new to step the important basics: how to assemble the step, adjust its height and step on it properly. These simple safety factors will allow students to participate comfortably without the worry or mishap caused by an uneven or unstable step.

    • 2

Set up the steps either vertically and horizontally. Show the basic step, and allow students to practice this for some time, starting with both the right and left foot in different sets. Vary the pace of music to allow them to adjust to the step as well.

    • 3

Teach footwork first, watch that most students have mastered it, and then add in hand and arm motions. Emphasize that doing both hand and foot motions are important for the most complete cardio workout.

    • 4

Slowly introduce a new step that builds upon the first basic up-and-down step. These include side-to-side motions, cross-overs, hops and turns. Take these introductions slowly as many new learners can become quickly confused by learning too much, too quickly.

    • 5

Offer a simpler option for students who can't follow a complex part of a routine. It may be easy to call these options "A" and "B." Even if a student can follow the complex part of the routine, falling back to the easier one is a great option if they become winded or tired.

    • 6

Cue moves with proper timing so that the routine flows, and students can easily follow along.

    • 7

Break down very complex routines into simple chunks that you focus on, master, and then add on to the rest of the routine.
