How to Select Step Aerobics Equipment
Instructions

1
Know the two most common pieces of supplemental equipment used in step aerobics workouts. First, dumbbells are used to strength-train the arms during your routine. Second, high-steps of varying or adjustable heights are frequently used to give your legs a more intense working-over.
-
2
Consult your step aerobics instructor if you are already a member of an aerobics class. She will be able to offer helpful advice on specific brands and models that will be well-suited to you.
-
3
Find a specialized store in your community whose only business is selling fitness equipment. Talk through your particular situation with a staff member. Be as specific as you can about what is involved in your workout and what muscle groups you want to target with your supplementary equipment. Ask directly if the store carries a similar piece of equipment for a lower price, and select judiciously.
-
4
Purchase a range of dumbbell weights. Since they are generally inexpensive, you can select lighter ones and heavier ones without breaking the bank. As your strength improves, you will be able to use heavier weights with your workout without having to make a return trip to the store.
-
5
Evaluate the merits of the varying high-steps you will encounter. The least expensive ones will not be adjustable. Higher-end models can be adjusted within various ranges specified on the packaging. The benefit of buying an adjustable model is similar to the reason you bought a range of dumbbell weights in Step 4. As your fitness level increases, you can select a height that will intensify your workout.

6
Know that there are also step aerobics machines designed specifically for home workouts. However, their benefits are marginal compared to the often-exorbitant costs. It is generally recommended that these be avoided, as they are very expensive and can take up a lot of room in your home.
