How to Become a Step Aerobics Teacher
Instructions

-
1
Take step aerobics classes yourself! Not only will this help you master aerobic techniques, it will also familiarize you with a variety of teaching styles. Use the opportunity to note what you like and dislike about your instructors' styles. Record your observations. Knowing what works and what doesn't will help you become a better teacher.
-
2
Find a reputable source offering master classes in step aerobics instruction. These are typically available through your local gym, though you should check to see if there are any specialized institutes in your community, especially if you live in a larger city.
-
3
Compare the rates of the various master classes you found in Step 2. Ask the people teaching the master classes about their professional backgrounds and teaching philosophies. Remember that price isn't necessarily the only consideration.
-
4
Learn about human anatomy, proper stretching and exercise techniques, kinesiology and get first-aid and CPR training while you complete your master classes. Practice step aerobics instructive techniques, such as cueing, choreographing a routine and giving verbal instructions, at home.
-
5
Get a practice class together consisting of friends, neighbors, family and co-workers. Be their step aerobics teacher for a session or two to get more comfortable leading other people. Watching workout routines on television or home video can also be highly instructive.
-
6
Apprentice with another instructor. Ideally, you want to find a situation in which you can co-teach a class with an experienced teacher you respect. Become the best by learning from the best.
-
7
Check with the gyms, fitness centers, physiotherapists and even hospitals in your municipality to find local teaching opportunities. The experience you gained in Step 6 will help you secure a position.
-
8
Plan a step aerobics class suitable for the age group and fitness level you'll be instructing. Choose suitable music and choreograph a routine that's neither too strenuous nor too easy. Adjust it as necessary, based on the feedback of your new class members.
