What is the Correct Method of Walking on a Treadmill?

Walking is an easy and simple activity that anybody can engage in. It is a low-impact and low-injury form of fitness exercise. However, there is a correct and more effective way to walk when using a treadmill.
  1. Speed and Safety

    • Treadmills have controllable speed settings. You can adjust the speed based on your own comfort level. Treadmills have an emergency halt switch or a pull attached to a string, which is often a bright red color so that you can press or pull it if the speed functions incorrectly.

    Handrails

    • Set a normal and comfortable speed for walking. Five kilometers per hour is a good way to start off. Use the handrails for additional support and balance if necessary. They are especially useful in the beginning when you get on and also when you get off, but do not make a habit of using the handrails, they are meant for beginners.

    Elevation

    • Stay in the center of the belt when walking and use the elevation feature of the treadmill. By changing the elevation at regular intervals, you are compensating for the wind resistance you would face when walking outdoors.

    Posture

    • Maintain and correct your walking posture when using the treadmill. Always look straight forward and do not swing your arms outward. Keep your shoulders relaxed.

    Hand Weights

    • You can burn more calories while walking by carrying 2- to 5-pound hand weights. This will serve to work out your upper body, tone and use more of your arm muscles during your treadmill walking sessions.
